Social Networking is my passion and I am asked many times how I have used social media in the success of my business. Now I will humbly acknowledge that I am not the only one using social media for a successful business and neither do I say that I am using it to its fullest potential. But it is true that social media has played a significant role in what I am today. So let me share with you what I think helped me.
1. Be At the Right Place at the Right Time
“The two most important requirements for major success are: first, being in the right place at the right time, and second, doing something about it”. I am always inspired by this quote by Raymond Kroc, the person who built McDonald’s into the world’s largest and most successful fast food chain.
Since early 2000, I have been in the online coaching field helping people to develop and succeed in their Internet businesses. Social media really took off in the mid 2000 decade and that is when I found myself at the right place at the right time. All my earlier learning from past years became a springboard for my growth along with social media.
2. Know Yourself
All of us have different personality types. Some are more comfortable with associating with people while some are more inclined to work by themselves. There are several personality tests such as DISC, Myers Briggs, the Enneagram and others which can help to profile your personality and suggest to you the best kind of career option. Believe me, it is worthwhile to do what you are mentally and physically designed to do rather than spending your energy in trying to fit a square peg in a round hole.
3. Concentrate on One Thing
It pays to focus and do one thing till it is successful. Otherwise one ends up having several half baked projects which do not go anywhere. Vince Lombardi once said, “Success demands singleness of purpose”
As for me, I choose one global theme every year and concentrate only on that. In 2008, I chose “Attraction Marketing” and talked and wrote mostly about it. In 2009, I chose to build the MVP Empowerment system and focused all my energies in developing it. And now this year, I have set my heart and mind on Social Media. I have found this strategy to be of great help to me.
4. Choose the Right Influences
Since we live in an interconnected world, we influence others and others influence us. However, not all influences are positive and beneficial. On social media, I find myself among people who love me and trust me for my advice. Hence, it is important that I choose the right influences in order to be of help to others.
5. Be Yourself, don’t Imitate
If YOU can’t be yourself, who else can? There is only one person in this whole world who can do exactly what you do in exactly the way you do it and that is YOU. If you imitate another, that will be a second hand product. Let me tell you one thing by which I can swear to God Almighty that if you want to be successful on social media, you just have to be YOURSELF and no one else.
6. Define what you want
Why do you think people do not get what they want in life? 99% of the times, those people do not know exactly what it is that they want whether it is their personal life or relationship or career. So you need to know in crystal clear terms what your goals are and what you want from social media. Do you want to develop your brand or do you want to generate more qualified leads or do you want to increase your fan following?
7. Plan and Implement
Social media is broad arena. If you do not have a time bound objective driven plan, you will not go anywhere. Once you have defined what you want, you need to develop a clear strategy and plan for achieving those goals and go ahead and implement them. Do things in steps so that you get a chance to learn from your experiences.
8. Stick to your Plan
This goes with #3 Concentrate on one thing till it becomes successful. By sticking to plan, I don’t recommend that you should not change your tactics when needed. All I am saying is that you need to focus on one business and not put your fingers in multiple businesses in the hope of earning from several income streams. The problem is that there are millions are things you can do on the Internet that you can easily get lost or waste time in exploring various avenues.
9. Share and Add Value
What you give is what you get. The success principle in social media is sharing. If you have a gift, share it with others. If you are able to add value to another’s business and growth, you will benefit both financially and in terms of goodwill and brand.
10. Spread Positive and Inspiring Messages
As I mentioned earlier, I am responsible for what I share with others. So I choose to share positive, inspiring and meaningful messages. There is no benefit whatsoever in spreading negativity which is always detrimental to the business. On the other hand, a positive attitude develops relationships and builds the business. I like this quote of Karl Buechner – “They may forget what you said, but they will never forget how you made them feel.” Always remember that.
Another point I must emphasize is that do not post anything just to get attention. If you have nothing to say, do not post a status update on Facebook or a tweet on Twitter but wait till you have something valuable to contribute.
11. Associate with the Right Mentors
You are a reflection of who you have associated with. Make sure you develop relationships with people who are several rungs higher on the success ladder. To reach there, they must have been in a position you are now and therefore, they are the right people to learn from. Choose your mentors as those people who can help you not only in business strategy but also emotionally, intellectually and spiritually.
12. Don’t wait, Act
If your aim is perfection, you will never get your act off the ground. While perfection is a noble aim, a lot of water will flow down the river and you might miss your opportunities. Good enough is perfect in most cases. So long as you are not under prepared, I suggest you get a head start in whatever you are doing.
13. Improvise
Success is a process and not an end-result. When you begin you might have several loose ends but as you start, you start tying them up and thus you build your business. Social media itself is not a static entity for which you can build a static perfect plan. Social media is one of the most dynamic systems on the Internet. You need to start, test your strategy, and be prepared to improvise and change quickly. It is like white water rafting. You get in first and then navigate the waves and the currents as you steer.
14. Get Infected with the Crazy Virus and be Passionate
Don’t be afraid to be a little crazy or “out of the mind”. Taking yourself too seriously has several drawbacks. And believe me, everyone is a little crazy anyways. So have fun while building your business. Have passion for what you are doing. Passion is the energy of life. I have seen many people doing their work half heartedly and it shows in their results. Whatever you do, put your heart and soul into it. Follow your passion and success will surely follow you.
I hope you have discovered some pearls of wisdom among these for yourself. If you feel like sharing some of your success secrets, I would really appreciate it. Do leave your comments below.

Hi Angela,
Great Article. i have started on the paths you talk about and your advice to sticking to a theme is a great one. I believe the theme is what sets creativity in my work. When I write an article I choose a theme and stick with it. I always try to give a piece of me through out and be myself.
I also understand and can relate to the spinning of the wheels absorbing what others are doing. And like you said it will take your time away from you. Focus is a major element to success as i have been told. I havn’t had any myself yet but I feel like I am close or just tacked by it. Don’t take me wrong I have been successful in many ways and at many different times. I am just new to the stratgies i am employing these days. lol.
