A blog is one of the best marketing tools available for an online marketer. With platforms like Wordpress, setting up your own professional blog is not a difficult task.
A content based blog is very easy to create and maintain. But when you want your blog to make money, bare content is not enough. You need to install plugins on your Wordpress blog that help you in a number of ways.
There are hundreds of plugins for Wordpress. However, some plugins are used by most of the top online marketers. Here are 7 such hot plugins which you can use on your blog.
1. Akismet
One of the major problems in running a blog is spam. If you are posting articles and blog posts, you will receive a lot of unwanted comments – usually spam. This gives an ugly look to your blog. The Akismet plugin for Wordpress is a great defense against spam.
2. Google Analytics
Do you want to know how many visitors browsed through your blog; where did they come from; how much time they spent on your blog and so on? The Google Analytics plugin will give you all this information using which you can write more targeted content for your blog.
3. Onlywire for Wordpress
Using this small plugin, you can publish your blog updates on multiple social networking sites with a click of a button.
4. Google XML Sitemap
This is a pretty useful plugin to have on your blog. Every time you update your blog or create a new post, this will automatically notify all major search engines which support the XML sitemap protocol. This pluggin works behind the scenes but is a very useful one to have on your blog.
5. WP Greet Box
This is a great plugin that can help you to offer a personalized experience to your blog visitors. Depending on where your visitors are coming from, they will be shown a different greeting. For instance, if someone comes to your blog from Twitter, they will be greeted with a message that will suggest them to tweet the post to their followers. For visitors who have no referrer URL, the plugin will simply ask them to subscribe to your RSS feed.
6. Thank Me Later
This is again another pluggin that helps to develop relationships with people who comment on your blog posts. It sends an email to the commenter thanking him for the comment and inviting him to visit again. This is a great time saving tool to include on your blog.
7. Subscribe to Comments
This plugin encourages more activity on your blog comments. When a visitor leaves a comment on your blog post, it will be shared with all the others who have commented on it previously.
Plugins help save time by automating a lot of repetitive tasks. The above list is only a small glimpse in to the world of Wordpress plugins. If you have a favorite plugin which has been useful to you, I would be glad if you can share it with me and others. Leave a comment below and let us know what your favorite Wordpress Plugin is!

Angela,
Thanks for the very useful list. I have most but didn’t know about the Thank Me Later plugin.
I’ve also started to you IntenseDebate which negates the need to use Subscribe to Comments. However if you don’t want to swap to IntenseDebate then Subscribe to Comments is great.

I actually prefer WP-Spamfree over Akismet, but it’s a personal choice. I hadn’t come across OnlyWire for WP before, so I will definitely get that one. Thanks for the pointer!
