Facebook is going great guns and I LIKE that. According to Hitwise, a web analytics company, Facebook overtook Google as the most visited site on the planet during the week ending 13th March. With over 400 million members worldwide; it has now become a platform of choice for meeting and making friends, and communicating with family and business associates.
At the April 21st F8 Developers Conference, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced several new features which are going to revolutionize the whole social experience on the Internet. At the center of the new offerings is the Open Graph Concept which is a way to connect people on the Internet using their likes about things, events, people and content as a reference point. Within a week of this announcement, more than 50,000 sites have added the LIKE pluggin.
I will explain to you right now how you can use the LIKE pluggin to your business advantage.
What is the LIKE pluggin?
Basically Facebook has made it extremely simple to add a LIKE pluggin to a site using a single line of HTML code. Whenever a visitor likes some content – a photo, a video or an article – he can click on the LIKE button which will instantly publish it on Facebook.
Using the LIKE pluggin on your Site
When you have a LIKE button on your site, you give an instant way for the visitor to share the content with his friends. This is a great word of mouth or viral publicity for your site. When the visitor’s friends visit your site, they also have the option of clicking on the LIKE button.
The cool thing about this is that if the visitor is logged in to Facebook while on your site, he will see who among his friends has also liked your site. Since it is natural that friends tend to like the same things, this will encourage him more to click on the LIKE button and thus increasing your social connections.
Using the LIKE Pluggin to share Informative Content
Sharing useful, informative, and motivating content is the only way to develop relationships with your Facebook followers. Whenever you come across some piece of content on the Internet which you want to share with your Facebook friends and fans, you could simply click the LIKE pluggin if it is present on that site. This will save your time in copying the URL of the site and then logging in to Facebook and then pasting it to your wall.
How to Add the LIKE Pluggin to your Site?
1. Go to http://developers.facebook.com/docs/reference/plugins/like.
2. Enter the details in the form including your site URL.
3. Click on Get Code to generate the one line HTML code.
4. Now paste the HTML code at the place on your site where you want to insert the Like Button.
That’s it. Pretty simple, isn’t it?
If you have a Wordpress blog, you can get several pluggins which will allow you to add the Facebook LIKE button to your blog posts. Here is one such pluggin
http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/simple-facebook-like/
Download the pluggin, unzip the contents in to the /wp-content/pluggins/ directory and activate it from the Pluggins Menu in Wordpress Admin Panel. That’s all.
I believe the LIKE button is a fantastic tool that you must have on your site or blog. I would be glad to know your experience with the LIKE button so feel free to share your comments below.

Hello Angela,
This is a great plugin… I absolutely love it when my visitors are able to easily share my stuff on their social networks for me. Also seeing the # of times it has been shared is more appealing for them to to want to join the cool people. I’ve actually switched to the “Digg Digg” plugin which features the Facebook share plugin, the tweetmeme plugin, and about 8-10 other social network buttons just like these.
Love your teaching style.
